Learn About Dental Bridges With Pranati S. Chokshi, DMD in Winter Garden, FL

A dental bridge is a prosthetic device used to replace one or more missing teeth, literally bridging the gap created by missing teeth. It consists of two main components: the pontic, which is the artificial tooth or teeth replacing the missing ones, and the abutment teeth, which are the natural teeth on either side of the gap that anchor the bridge. The abutment teeth are typically crowned to provide stable support for the bridge.

A dental bridge restores the ability to chew and speak properly, enhances your smile and facial appearance by filling the gap left by missing teeth, prevents remaining teeth from drifting out of position, and supports facial tissues to help maintain the natural shape of your face.

What Are The Types of Dental Bridges?

  • Traditional Dental Bridge: The most common type, where the pontic is held in place by dental crowns cemented onto the adjacent natural teeth.
  • Cantilever Bridge: Used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth.
  • Maryland Bridge (Resin-Bonded Bridge): Has a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the back of adjacent natural teeth, requiring less alteration to these teeth.
  • Implant-Supported Bridge: Used when more than one tooth is missing, supported by dental implants instead of crowns on natural teeth.

What Is The Process of Getting a Dental Bridge?

The process begins with an initial consultation where Dr. Chokshi evaluates your oral health, takes X-rays, and discusses your treatment options. If a bridge is the best solution for your needs, the adjacent teeth (abutment teeth) are prepared by removing a portion of the enamel to make room for the crowns that will support the bridge. iTero® digital impressions of your teeth are then taken to create a custom bridge, which is fabricated in a dental laboratory. While waiting for the permanent bridge, a temporary bridge may be placed to protect the prepared teeth and gums.

Once the permanent bridge is ready, the temporary bridge is removed, and the permanent one is fitted and adjusted for a proper fit and bite. Finally, the permanent bridge is cemented onto the abutment teeth, securely holding it in place.

What Care and Maintenance Is Needed?

Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial for the longevity of your dental bridge. Regular brushing and flossing, especially around the bridge area, help prevent decay and gum disease. Regular checkups with Dr. Chokshi ensure that your bridge and overall oral health are maintained, and professional cleanings keep your bridge and surrounding teeth in optimal condition.

If you’re considering a dental bridge, Dr. Chokshi can help you determine the best type for your needs and guide you through the process.
