Book OnlineTypes of Dentures
There are two main types of dentures: conventional full dentures and conventional immediate dentures.
Conventional full dentures are designed for patients who have lost all their natural teeth in either the upper or lower jaw, or both. These dentures are typically made of acrylic and are custom fitted to the patient’s mouth to ensure comfort and functionality. The process of getting conventional full dentures involves waiting until the gums have fully healed after tooth extraction, which can take several weeks to months. Once healing is complete, precise measurements and molds of the patient’s gums are taken to create dentures that fit perfectly.
Conventional immediate dentures are designed to be placed in the mouth immediately after the removal of the remaining natural teeth. Unlike conventional full dentures, which require a healing period, immediate dentures allow patients to avoid the inconvenience of being without teeth during the healing process. The process involves taking measurements and creating the dentures before the teeth are extracted. Although immediate dentures provide the advantage of immediate tooth replacement, they may require additional adjustments or relining as the gums and bone heal and shrink over time. This ensures that the dentures continue to fit well and function properly as the mouth undergoes changes post-extraction.
Life with Dentures
It is important to note that adjusting to dentures requires learning to chew on both sides simultaneously, as opposed to using only the front teeth or one side. A properly fitted denture should enable you to enjoy most of the foods you could with your natural teeth.
Caring for dentures is crucial to maintaining their function and longevity. Although they are not real teeth, dentures require similar care. Brushing them to remove plaque and food particles before removal is essential. Once removed, dentures should be placed in room temperature water or a denture cleaning solution, avoiding hot water that could warp them. Due to their delicate nature, handling dentures with care is important to prevent damage, and any adjustments should be left to Dr. Chokshi.
